MULTI-PURPOSE COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTER
GREEK, UGANDA
BACKGROUND
The country of Uganda has suffered under the violence of war for many years. In Eastern Uganda thousands of people live in Internally Displaced Peoples’ (IDP) Camps. During the
early and late 1990s, cattle raiders sparked ethnically-led conflicts.Thousands of people fled theirhomes and many were killed. Property and possessions were taken or destroyed, leaving the localpopulation in desperate need. Now, security has improved and the Government of Uganda is trying toresettle these displaced people back into their home areas. A community of former IDPs has resettled in and around the village of Greek, which lies in the east of Uganda, about 400 kilometers from the capital city ofKampala. The community has apopulation of about 2,000 people, the majority of which is children. Basic social services are lacking and healthcare facilities do not exist. Many children are not able to attend school. Poor sanitation and waterborne diseases are prevalent, and within the village there is not a single cement structure. Local markets and trading centers are not
in the resettlement area, but in a distant town. Almost everyone living in Greek is in need, particularly the children. Although the people of Greek face many challenges, there are certain aspects that make their community a good location for this project. The area has a multi-ethnic communityliving and willing to work together. Local leaders are highly motivated toassist their community. There is a good road system that leads to the
area and the Greek River provides water to sustain the community.
